It is a new year and with that many bargains are to be found in both Japan (where I currently live) and America (my home country). New Year’s Day is also a time for bargain sales in both countries and while looking at the newspaper ads I said to my wife “Look at these great bargains. Your sister should buy this for her new place.” And my wife’s response was “She won’t buy it. She is a tight wad.”
The phrase tight wad means to hold onto one’s money and not buy anything unless it is absolutely necessary. You can also call someone a tight wad if they are cheap.
