gotcha

Today, one of my students presented the word gotcha wondering what it means. Well it is a shortening (省略) of the words “got you” and means “I caught you” or “I understand.”
Well the former is often used like “I gotcha.” and you will here children use it when they are playing a game of tag.
The latter is often used to express you understand what the other person is saying like,
Bill: So you need to pick up the party items by 6 pm and deliver them to the customer by 7 pm.
Jack: I gotcha.
Sometimes it is doubled like it “I gotcha, I gotcha!” similar to the way Japanese used 分かった、分かった!
